We should keep the death penalty because:

  • Retribution: The death penalty is used because the offender deserves to die for the crime they committed. The death punishment of the convicted is said to bring closure for the victim’s family. The punishment of the convicted should be similar to the crime for which they are found guilty of, known as lex talionis. This basically means an “eye for an eye.”
  • Deterrence: The death penalty will strongly discourage future offenders from committing crimes because they will be in fear of the consequences they will receive.
  • Incapacitation: By incapacitating offenders, the death penalty physically  inhibits the offenders from committing a crime again.
  • Cost: The death penalty is less expensive for the State to do compared to other forms of punishment, such as life in prison without parole.
